He will soon retire from the UK Open University's School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. See p.20 Alexander Drechsel Alexander Drechsel is an EU staff interpreter (German, English, French and Romanian), and a technology geek with a special interest in tablets. He regularly shares his knowledge with fellow interpreters, both offline and via his blog and podcasts: www.adrechsel.de. See p.16 Philip Harding-Esch Philip Harding-Esch is a freelance project manager and consultant specialising in education, media and policy initiatives, and supports the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Languages. He studied French and Linguistics at Oxford and qualified as a translator in 2007. See p.18 Erik Hertog Professor Emeritus Dr Erik Hertog taught Cultural Studies and both Conference and Community Interpreting at KU Leuven, Antwerp Campus (formerly Lessius University College). He has been involved in several EU projects on access to justice across languages. See p.11 Will McMorran Will McMorran is a Senior Lecturer in French and Comparative Literature at Queen Mary University of London. Last year he translated Philippe Brenot's comic- strip history, The Story of Sex, and co-translated the Marquis de Sade's The 120 Days of Sodom with Thomas Wynn. He is currently working on the book Reading Sade. See p.14 John Morley Dr John Morley is Chair of the Association of University Language Centres in the UK and Ireland (AULC), and Director of the University-wide Language Programmes at the University of Manchester's University Language Centre. See p.24 Peter Robertson A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Peter Robertson FCIL is President and Founding Editor of The International Literary Quarterly (InterLitQ). As an author, his fiction has been translated into several languages, and he has published translations of work by authors such as Jorge Luis Borges, Rubén Darío and Paul Éluard. See p.22 CONTRIBUTORS COUNCIL NEWS Karen Stokes, Chair of Council, reports on the January meeting Council decided last year to reduce its number of meetings (excluding the annual strategic planning session) from five to four each year. Under the new schedule, Council will meet in January, April, July and October. An advantage of the new timing is that each meeting now aligns with the production of the quarterly management accounts, giving members of Council a clear view of CIOL's performance against budget at regular points in the financial year. The January meeting is also when Council reviews and approves the audited accounts for the previous financial year, and has the chance to raise queries prior to the accounts being presented to the AGM in March. As always, we received a detailed presentation of the accounts, and answers to questions, from our Finance Director Graeme Copestake. The next major event on Council's horizon is the strategic planning day in April, which will establish strategic priorities for CIOL to 2020 and beyond. Council was asked to consider whether CIOL's aims and values, as currently expressed, remain fit for purpose, and members were invited to submit their comments. The membership survey, due to be circulated in February, would provide essential input into the strategic planning process. Judith Ridgway, Chair of the Applications Committee, reported on the significant amount of work done on improving the website, with an extensive range of resources, including hundreds of past examination papers, now available to IoLET Affiliate members. All affiliate applications can now be submitted online, and this is to be extended to Associate, Member and Fellow applications. Council welcomed the interest in the Language Partner scheme shown by various bodies, including branches of government and higher education institutions. Council received a report from Jane Galbraith, Head of Membership, on recent developments in the divisions and societies, particularly the appointment of committee members for the China Association and the formal establishment of the Midlands Network. Finally, Council was pleased to confirm the appointment of two new members of The Linguist Editorial Board: Mary Frank MCIL and Student Affiliate Adam Dewhirst.
