LINCOLN VISIT
Chair of Council Keith Moffitt discussed future challenges for
CIOL with Lincolnshire Society members at their February event
On 26 February, 30 members of the
Business, Professions and Government
(BPG) Division and their guests were
guided through the splendid Armourers'
Hall in the City of London by the
Clerk, Peter Bateman, a former EU
interpreter. Founded in 1322, the
Armourers and Brasiers is one of 110
city livery companies, and has occupied
the same site since 1346, though the
present hall dates from 1841. The
Armourers' heyday lasted until around
1650; since then, the company has
moved forward and material science is
an important focus of its work today.
We were shown one of the company's
treasures – a very fine suit of armour
made in the 1580s for Sir Henry Lee. On
the walls nearby are portraits of Sir Henry
and Anne Vavasour, one of his 'reading
ladies' – an intriguing euphemism!
Moving to the hall itself, Peter gave a
fascinating account of the Battle of
Agincourt. On display were examples
of 15ft pikes; the aim was to force the
enemy to charge, remove them from
their horses and capture them for
ransom. The mantelpiece of the hall is
surmounted by a fine St George slaying
the dragon – it dates from 1528 and is
another company treasure.
Thanks to Peter for a most instructive
and thought-provoking tour, and to
Maria Allen (BPG Events Organiser) for
arranging this fine event, after which
many of us went for lunch nearby.
