CPD: Giving you more How CIOL is extending the continuing professional development courses it offers by providing accreditation to carefully selected partners, starting with eCPD Webinars CIOL has a strong commitment to lifelong learning and understands the important role continuing professional development (CPD) plays. While evidencing CPD is not a mandatory requirement for membership, the Code of Professional Conduct states that CPD is "good professional practice" and "CIOL strongly recommends practising members engage in CPD to maintain, update and develop their skills". For Chartered Linguists, "CPD is a condition of initial and continuing registration". CIOL offers CPD opportunities to its members through its programme of face-to-face courses, and training days offered by its three professional divisions. Although highly successful, reach is limited, so CIOL has been working with the CPD Standards Office (CSO) to extend its programme. A joint accreditation scheme seemed an obvious step forward, providing a framework for CIOL to offer highly reputable CPD training providers the opportunity to work with us and the CSO to achieve independent accreditation for their CPD training. As the UK's leading provider of CPD accreditation, the CSO has a mission to support all those involved in CPD to make it "better, easier and more affordable" – three factors likely to make training opportunities an attractive prospect for CIOL members. According to the CSO, CPD is "the term used to describe the commitment to lifelong learning, a skill that is invaluable to all people across every segment of society". Its own role in accreditation involves "helping companies to formalise their expertise into a structured and recognised approach to learning. This can then be applied to the CPD needs of individual professionals." First accredited partner CIOL's first partner to be awarded accreditation under the new scheme is eCPD Webinars Ltd, a company which offers CPD training through webinars, videos and training courses specifically designed for linguists. Dedicated to language professionals and anyone working in the language industry, eCPD was founded by Lucy Brooks FCIL CL to meet an increasing need for flexible on-demand CPD. Jane Galbraith, CIOL Head of Membership, said: "External accreditation ensures the integrity of the CPD offer and will provide CIOL members with the welcome reassurance that the training offered is of a high standard through independent quality assurance. The partnership allows CIOL members to book eCPD webinars and purchase videos that meet a recognised quality standard." New membership benefit CIOL members are eligible for a 10% discount on all eCPD webinars and the online library of videos. To access the discount code, log in to the members' area of the CIOL website. eCPD's products cover a wide range of subjects for all linguists – from growing your business to using technology and specialised industries, such as art, tourism, law and medicine. For CIOL's full 2016 workshop programme, with information on dates and discounts, see the CIOL website.
