He is Chairman of the Richmond and Twickenham branch of LINC BPG COUNCIL NEWS Chair of Council Karen Stokes reports on the September meeting Stationers' Hall, near St Paul's Cathedral, provided an unusually grand venue not only for Council's first meeting of the new financial year, but also for the Translating Division AGM and Threlford Lecture, held on the same day. Following the presentation of the management accounts to July 2016, Council received a final, detailed report from the Chief Executive on the long-term planning day held in the summer, which will stand us in good stead for the next formal review of our strategic plan in spring 2017. Our next agenda item concerned the next round of Council elections. It was confirmed that James Farmer, Keith Moffitt and Paul Shipman were all due to retire by rotation. Council welcomed the revised guidance document for candidates and simplification of the nomination process. More broadly, we discussed the need to plan for future vacancies on the various committees of Council. Committee chairs were asked to produce a formal succession plan in time for the November meeting. Following a discussion at the July meeting on the role and procedures for nomination of the Vice Presidents, Council approved a proposal for the VPs to be appointed for a rolling three-year term, rather than annually, as at present. The necessary change to the rules will be brought to the 2017 AGM for approval by the membership. Other formal matters included updates to the terms of reference of the Finance & Executive Committee, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee and Chartered Linguist Registration Board, and approval of the revised criteria for Chartered Linguist registration, which include a fee waiver for CIOL members. The result of the UK referendum on membership of the European Union continues to feature regularly in Council discussions. It was reported that CIOL would take part in the special interest group established by the Professional Associations Research Network, as well as cooperating with other bodies in the sector. Finally, Council recorded its formal approval of the award of an Honorary Fellowship to this year's Threlford Memorial Lecturer, Professor Dorothy Kenny of Dublin City University.
