The disciplinary procedures have been extensively revised in the past couple of years, and a review of the Code of Professional Conduct was timely. It was one of the topics discussed at last year's Members' Day, looking at it from the perspective that when a problem arises a practitioner's first recourse is the Institute's Professional Code. A revised code, providing a coherent and positive framework for professional practice, was approved by Council in July, to come into force on 1 September. Available at www.ciol.org.uk > membership > membershipbenefits, it is easier to navigate and read, and is much more streamlined than the previous version. It is a single document, applicable to all areas and specialisms in professional language work. It is a clearer document than the previous version in that it does not engage with questions of business practice but focuses consistently on matters affecting professionalism and professional ethics. The new Code of Conduct is firmly based on eight general principles of professional conduct: • Professional judgement • Linguistic competence • Subject competence • Professional competence • Continuing professional development (CPD) • Responsibilities to clients/employers • Responsibilities to fellow language professionals and to the Chartered Institute of Linguists • Responsibilities to other agencies, public bodies and society. The code provides a clear set of benchmarks that the general public can expect of a professional linguist. This is key to the promotion and maintenance of the highest standards of integrity and professional responsibility. A useable and effective Code of Professional Conduct is essential to the purposes of CIOL, and the new code is designed to meet those requirements. Tony Bell FCIL, Hon Treasurer, CIOL Council Paul Bishop FCIL is Professor of German at Glasgow University and has been teaching the language across all levels since 1994. In his capacity as the William Jacks Chair in Modern Languages, with a remit to pursue languages 'principally for commercial education', he engages with a wide range of stakeholders, including the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, Scottish Government's Strategic Implementation Group for languages, and the Goethe-Institut. He is committed to developing a sustainable languages policy for the future. Professor Bishop has written and edited some 20 books in the fields of intellectual history and intercultural studies. He has a DPhil in German and more recently obtained the IoLET Diploma in Translation.
