Cathy pearson, deputy head of unit for the English booth in the Eu's directorate for interpretation (sCiC), began by telling us that the demand for interpreting has declined since 2008. she explained that each booth decides at the start of the year on its 'language profile' – i.e, the particular combination of a, B and C languages it offers (an a language being thoroughly understood by the interpreter in all circumstances; B, fully understood in most circumstances; and C, an additional language). Cathy stressed that the Eu interprets into a languages only. when delegates put on their headphones they know they are going to hear a top-class interpretation of what the speaker is saying. to maintain this high quality, sCiC encourages interpreters to learn more languages, and a lot of in-house and thematic training is available. dedicated teams are also used for specialised work. after an excellent networking lunch, we welcomed robert russell, who works as a freelance Eu-accredited interpreter attached to the English booth, using French, German, portuguese and spanish into English. having negotiated the Eu's 'three strikes and you're out' accreditation test policy, he is now based in strasbourg, although he is frequently sent out 'on mission'. robert enjoys the work thoroughly and described his working conditions as 'amazing'. as a freelancer, he is paid for preparation time on specialised work, and gets a pension and even sick pay. however, Eu freelancers usually have no choice over where they work, so they tend to get less work than staff interpreters. to end the day, sandra Fröhlich-mcCormack took questions from our young interpreters and tried to reassure them that her job as a freelance conference interpreter could not be bettered.
