Shirley Lawes Dr Shirley Lawes MCIL was, until recently, the Subject Leader for PGCE languages at the Institute of Education. She has researched and written extensively on language learning and teaching in UK schools, and on teacher education, and her recent publications include Reviving the Secondary Foreign Languages Curriculum. See p.14 Frances Mechan-Schmidt Freelance translator and journalist Frances Mechan-Schmidt MCIL has been an examiner for the German State Examination for English and German translation since she completed the examination in 2003. See p.24 Marilyn Sephocle Dr Marilyn Sephocle is Professor of German at Howard University, and set up the Simultaneous Interpretation Unit there in 1995. A pioneer in the field of Afro- German studies and founder of the Women Ambassadors Foundation, she is widely published, with works including Then, They Were Twelve. She speaks nine languages, including Creole, French, Russian and Arabic, and is now learning Swahili. See p.22 Sandrijn Van Den Noortgate Sandrijn Van Den Noortgate recently completed a postgraduate course in Conference Interpreting and an MA in Interpreting at Antwerp University, for which she did a comparative study of interpreting in WWI and the present day. She now hopes to move into the field of translation and interpreting. She studied languages at the University of Bath and holds an MA in Language, Ethnicity and Education from King's College London. Her main professional interest is in tackling educational disadvantage. She can be found on Twitter @IsobelLovesMFL. See p.20 Martyn Bond A UK press correspondent for the Council of Europe, Dr Martyn Bond HonFCIL is also a Visiting Professor at the University of London. His media career began at the BBC in the 1960s, and has included working as a BBC correspondent in Berlin, a Press Officer for the Council of Ministers in Brussels, and Head of the European Parliament Office in the UK. See p.26 Krista Cowman Krista Cowman is Professor of History and Director of Research at the University of Lincoln and previously worked in the School of Cultural Studies at Leeds Metropolitan University. Her special interests include women's history, on which she has published several books and gives regular talks. Dr Cowman also works as a media consultant, most recently on the feature film The Suffragette. See p.8 Ian Higgins Ian Higgins is Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of St Andrews, where he taught French for 33 years. His translation of Albert-Paul Granier's Great War poems, Cockerels and Vultures, was published in January.
