COUNCIL
NEWS
Executive Director CIOL
Alan Peacock reports
on the meeting of
Council on 26 April
The meeting of
Council in April started
with the election of
Council Officers and
the appointment of
Committee and Board
members for 2014-15.
Keith Moffitt was
re-elected as Chair
of Council, and
Christine Pocock and Tony Bell were re-elected as
Vice-Chair and Honorary Treasurer respectively.
Karen Stokes stood down from the Editorial Board
after seven years' service – four as Chair. Council
thanked Karen for her significant contribution to the
development of The Linguist, in particular its
transition to an online presence. Ken Paver was
appointed as Chair of the Editorial Board and
Council wished him well in the role.
Ann Carlisle reported on the recent activities of
the Educational Trust. The 2014 Diploma in
Translation session has run smoothly, with results due
for release shortly. The new team had performed
well in challenging circumstances, as a result of staff
changes during the session. The CBS Police
examinations had taken place at the end of March,
with 50 candidates in nine languages.
I reported that the new and much improved
Find-a-Linguist (F-a-L) service would be launched
with the new website, which was making excellent
progress. The website will provide a platform that
will improve customer experience and engagement.
At the AGM on 15 March, staff member and project
coordinator Jack Sellen had given those present a
short presentation on the website. I also reported on
the findings of the Membership Survey (for details,
see page 8).
Work on the new Strategic Plan is well
underway, and Council considered a draft version
at the meeting. It was agreed that members of
Council and the Trust Board should meet for a
half day during the following few weeks to review
and fine-tune the plan, with a view to bringing a
final version for approval to the next Council
meeting in July.
