@Linguist_CIOL JUNE/JULY The Linguist 31 INSTITUTE MATTERS COUNCIL NEWS A comprehensive report on the April meeting by Chair of Council Karen Stokes The April meeting began with a welcome to our new President, Richard Hardie, and to the four members elected at the AGM in March: Eneida Garcia Villanueva, Reza Navaei, Rodney Mantle and Marta Stelmaszak Rosa. The first part of the meeting was devoted to the formal matters usually dealt with at this point in the year: approval of the terms of reference of Council committees and boards, and appointment of Chairs and committee members; appointment of directors of the dormant subsidiary companies and the newly acquired eCPD Webinars Ltd; confirmation of divisional management committee members; and the appointment of members of the IoLET (Educational Trust) company. Council agreed unanimously to co-opt Ken Paver (outgoing Chair of The Linguist Editorial Board) for a one-year term. Elections for the Chair and Vice Chair(s) of Council would be deferred to the July meeting, based on the nomination process agreed in January. Dates were set for the next two CIOL AGMs: 16 March 2019 and 14 March 2020. Council reviewed the management accounts for Quarter 2 and received an update on the three-year budget planning process. Progress towards a potential office move was discussed. Council received reports from the CEO and Head of Membership, and agreed a change to the membership admissions criteria, to streamline the evidence requirements for work experience across disciplines. Updates to the standing orders were approved and Council agreed a Code of Conduct for members of Council, boards and committees. The new Investigation and Conduct Procedures and associated documents (replacing the existing Disciplinary Procedures) were approved. Professor Chris Pountain, Chair of the IoLET Board, outlined the terms of reference and composition of the new Awards Committee, which will decide on future winners of the Threlford Cup, David Crystal Trophy and new Nick Bowen Award, a monetary prize to assist a young CIOL member to participate in a project or placement that supports international understanding. Council was pleased to note the support for the award from Dr Bowen's family. The 1st-time panellist I imagine that the excitement and trepidation I felt as Members' Day approached was more than was felt by most. This was not just my first Members' Day, full of promise for networking opportunities and thought- provoking talks, but also my first professional speaking engagement. Based on my Twitter activity, the CIOL team had asked me to be the member representative on the careers panel. I seized the opportunity, thanked my lucky Twitter stars, and left the inevitable anxiety to another day. Sure enough, the doubts arrived in droves. In the build-up to the day, I had flashbacks to early interpreting assignments where the threat of hyper- ventilation loomed large. Deciding to be proactive, I reached out to CIOL who suggested a chat with the chair of the panel, Chair of Council Karen Stokes. That was a great help, as Karen reassured me that I was the right person for the task. Nevertheless, I worried that nerves would get the better of me. Instead, it was a very positive experience that showed me just how much progress I've made since getting my Masters. I was soon enjoying the experience and realising that I did, at least, know enough to answer the audience's questions; so much so, in fact, that during the networking breaks people came to me for advice!
