APRIL/MAy The Linguist 7 thelinguist.uberflip.com NEWS & EDITORIAL which are listed in the left-hand sidebar: Translating, Interpreting, Business & Government, Education, Language Focus, Technology, Brexit, Opinion & Comment and Institute Matters. Clicking on a subject area will bring up a collection of relevant articles. Back issues from 2017 are available in addition to each new issue, and there are plans to add articles from previous issues in time. The home page gives an overview of the latest content in the form of a responsive contents page, showing the most recent story from each category. Readers can also link to the latest and previous issues from the cover images in the left-hand sidebar. As with the flipbook version, the most recent content will be available exclusively to CIOL members via a login for the first two months. The appearance of the new online issue is influenced by the design of the printed magazine, but it is more simple, with articles appearing as single-column, scroll-down text, which is easier to read on screen. Content is displayed as responsive HTML, which means it will resize and adapt to any screen size, from desktops to mobile phones. While reading the articles, it is possible to increase and decrease the font size. The search function allows readers to find specific words or phrases across all issues, or to search for articles on a particular subject; while the print button makes it easy to print individual articles. According to Butler, "The new platform has some limitations, but we plan to build on it. In future, we hope to provide social media sharing buttons, not currently offered by Page Lizard. Also on our wishlist is a contributors database, so that readers can easily access other articles by the same writer and find out more about them; a facility for readers to leave their comments; and, if budgets allow, an app that will improve mobile access further." She adds: "We will be reviewing the new platform as we go along and addressing feedback from readers, particularly regarding any issues with useability." Replacing the 'flipbook' version it has used for more than four years, the new platform reflects a trend in online publishing away from the concept of a digital issue that reflects the layout of the printed magazine. Instead, readers increasingly expect responsive functions, such as searchable content, a simplified 'look' for screen reading and greater flexibility. Page Lizard is known in the membership sector for supplying digital editions of print materials through a flexible and well- supported mobile publishing platform. "After meeting with the team, we felt that they would produce an online product that reflects the standards of the printed issue," says Marketing Manager Debbie Butler. The new platform features dual publishing modes, allowing readers to choose their preferred reading experience – whether from front to back cover like a print edition, or by delving into specific topics of interest.
