Saturday 17 February Dundee A talk by Marion Spöring, Senior Lecturer in Languages and European Studies at Dundee University and Chair of the University Council for Modern Languages (UCML) Scotland, and Hannah Doughty, a professional development officer at Scotland's National Centre for Languages (SCILT). They will look at the work of UCML Scotland, SCILT and other language education bodies across all sectors and the wider community in Scotland. My expectations were met again at the Translating Division AGM in September, with Sue Leschen's talk, 'Work Without Your Own Terms and Conditions at Your Peril'. After a warm welcome, TD Chair Elizabeth Guyatt presented her report, summarising the activities, achievements and work of the division, including the adoption of its constitution. She then paid tribute to Dr Nicholas Bowen HonFCIL, CIOL President, who died shortly before the AGM. Beatrix Mett then presented the Treasurer's report, before the AGM finished with the election of all committee members. Sue Leschen MCIL CL gave an inspirational talk about the importance of terms and conditions in the translation business. After outlining her legal background, she presented a lot of useful advice, guidelines and examples. The type of agreement required when providing translation as a freelancer or member of a translation association is not dissimilar from a tenancy or employment contract. Terms and conditions give us peace of mind and protection in case of unforeseen circumstances. Sue discussed the aspects we should consider and agree with our clients before commencing any translation work. As a native Polish speaker, I was pleased that the Association of Polish Translators and Interpreters was used as an example of an organisation which has its own terms and conditions. There was great interaction between the speaker and audience, with Sue answering a lot of questions during her talk, without waiting for the Q&A part of the presentation. We listened with interest and learnt a lot of new and useful information. The day finished with networking drinks and snacks. This allowed us to exchange our thoughts about the AGM and to share our experiences. The chance to speak to other translators was very useful, as I was able to gather valuable advice at the beginning of my career. I was so excited that on my way home I booked myself a place on the next TD event: 'Legal Translation for the Terrified' on 1 December. On your terms NEWCOMER ALDONA MACH MCIL IS ENTHUSED AND INSPIRED AT ONE OF HER FIRST TRANSLATING DIVISION EVENTS April 20TH ANNIVERSARY AGM & 'MAX YOUR VOICE' TALK Saturday 28 April Wig & Mitre, Steep Hill, Lincoln, 12-4pm The society celebrates its 20th anniversary over lunch at this year's AGM. Frances Parkes's talk will focus on how speech is produced in the body, how the voice is amplified and the most efficient way to project it. She will teach participants to use the voice in a dynamic way, and introduce techniques designed for interpreters. Book by 21 April: lincolnshiresociety @ciol.org.uk. June ANGLOPHONER TAG Friday 15 June Sozio-Kulturelles Zentrum St Spiritus, Greifswald GER This year's theme is Translating the Arts: The art of translation. Greifswald and the surrounding area were immortalised in the paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, and the 2018 Anglophoner Tag will include an exploration of his art, and translation in the arts more broadly. Speakers include Alexandra Jones on translating poetry, Nick Tanner on translating Harry Potter, and Professor Harry Walter on translating proverbs. Accompanying LINC
