BPG GER LINC www.ciol.org.uk INSTITUTE MATTERS DIVISIONS & SOCIETIES A web of ethical dilemmas AT THE INTERPRETING DIVISION'S AGM IN JUNE, MICHAEL WELLS EXPLORED A RANGE OF ETHICAL DILEMMAS FOR INTERPRETERS IN THE DIGITAL WORLD Data protection, copyright, Facebook posts, and the sometimes unclear distinction between a public and private online presence, were all topics discussed at the Interpreting Division's AGM on 3 June. Committee member Maria-Teresa Grau MCIL, a professional interpreter, translator and university lecturer (Westminster, London Metropolitan and Alcalá, Spain), led a practical seminar on 'Interpreting Dilemmas and Professional Conduct in the Digital Era'. She presented a variety of scenarios that have the potential to create ethical dilemmas for interpreters both inside and outside the workplace – some of which may be challenging in terms of the codes of professional conduct for interpreters. Attendees then split into groups to discuss topics including how to use photos and templates for web content for marketing purposes; how interpreters should behave in online forums, such as closed Facebook groups, when exchanging information about colleagues' performances, client relations and other potentially sensitive business information; and how to manage terms and conditions, particularly when an assignment is recorded. Richard Delaney FCIL followed with an amusing and useful overview of 'Copyright and Confidentiality'. Now based in Berlin, Richard trained as a lawyer in London, and started his presentation by discussing the 1986 Berne Convention for the protection of literary and artistic works, which defines the rights of translators and conference interpreters under international law. He went on to explain how these rights are applied and should be respected, and how linguists should be careful in using information found on the internet. He also discussed confidentiality, an issue of particular importance for freelance interpreters working with clients whose information should be protected. He stressed the need for due care in office-sharing situations, for instance when a confidential document on a computer might be seen by others. He ended by reminding attendees that the Data Protection Act covered all personal data collected from clients, not just information subject to confidentiality agreements. After an enjoyable networking lunch, the Interpreting Division held its Annual General Meeting, at which it elected its Management Committee. ID Chair Christine Pocock reported on the year's CPD (continuing professional development) programme, marketing efforts, InterpNet online network, and CIOL's recent requirement for divisions to comply with its policies covering data protection, volunteers, equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), risk assessment and annual reports to Council.
