LINC LINC ADMISSIONS COUNCIL NEWS Karen Stokes, Chair of Council, reports on the July meeting The final Council meeting of the financial year was held on 16 July. We were pleased to welcome our new co-opted member, Adam Ramsey, to his first formal meeting. Council examined the latest set of management accounts and approved three key financial documents: the budget for the next three years, the associated growth plan, and the arrangements for protecting the remaining proceeds from the sale of Saxon House. Council recorded its thanks to the executive team for the detailed work that had gone into all three documents. Financial planning is, of course, closely entwined with decisions on strategic priorities, and there was a wide-ranging discussion following on from the strategic planning day held in June. Two key themes were CIOL's partnerships with other bodies in the languages sector and beyond, and further strengthening the relationship between CIOL and IoLET. Council welcomed the work done by the membership team on streamlining the process of Chartered Linguist registration. We considered a number of issues relating to elections and voting rights. Changes to the By-Laws and Rules, agreed at the AGM in March, have brought much-needed flexibility and we agreed unanimously to extend voting rights (and the right to stand for election to Council) to ACILs, bringing around 1,000 members into the electoral process. We also agreed to develop more detailed guidance for members interested in standing for election, and to designate members of Council who would be happy to have an informal conversation with potential candidates. Members of Council also agreed to a voluntary arrangement to comply with the principle of serving for a maximum of six years on any CIOL committee (which came into effect from the 2016 AGM), as we work through the previous system of retirement by rotation. An item we had agreed to revisit, following the 2014 governance review, was the role and arrangements for nomination of our Vice Presidents. A final proposal was due to be put to Council for approval in September.
