She talks about the impact of languages on her life and career in her native Spanish (for the English version, see ciol.org.uk). 'Los idiomas han formado parte de mi vida desde la infancia puesto que crecí en un ambiente bilingüe donde alternar español y euskera es bastante habitual, así que utilizarlos en mi vida profesional resultó ser algo muy natural. He seguido aprendiendo idiomas porque me gusta comunicar, viajar y conocer otras culturas, algo que, en mi opinión, no se puede lograr sin ellos. Soy abogada y me especialicé en comercio internacional. Llevaba un tiempo haciendo traducciones gracias a mis conocimientos de inglés y francés cuando comencé a trabajar por casualidad en el sector de los recubrimientos de superficies. Tuve mucha suerte porque ese trabajo me dio la oportunidad de combinar mi amor por los idiomas y por la química con mis conocimientos de derecho y comercio internacional. En la actualidad, además de traducir, ofrezco mis servicios a empresas que quieran establecerse en mercados de otros países. Además del inglés y el español, utilizo también el euskera y el francés. La industria de los recubrimientos de superficies es muy especializada y se necesita ser muy preciso al expresarse puesto que la terminología y el contenido pueden llegar a ser muy técnicos. Recuerdo la primera formación que recibí: me estaban hablando en español pero yo no endendía ni una sola palabra. Los documentos que traduzco cubren una variedad de temas que van desde moda hasta contratos. Desempeñas una profesión al mismo tiempo que aprendes cosas nuevas cada día. El reto no es traducir sino comunicar. Puede que seas capaz de juntar palabras y aplicar la gramática correctamente pero eso no quiere decir que estés comunicando. Además de la lengua se necesita conocer la cultura. La recompensa llega cuando sientes que has transmitido el mensaje claramente. He vivido en países diferentes y eso me ha ayudado a poder captar los pequeños detalles de las diferentes culturas. Me gusta mucho leer en idiomas distintos e intento alternarlos. En este momento tengo cuatro libros haciendo cola, cada uno en una lengua diferente. No puedo resistir la tentación de tener libros de cocina en distintos idiomas y por eso cuando viajo compro muchas revistas sobre el tema. Esta ha sido una buena manera de practicar idiomas. With more than 10 years' experience as a translator, he works on highly technical financial and legal documents from Spanish and French into English for several UN organisations, and is also a conference interpreter for the World Bank and IMF international missions. Robertson has translated full-length books into Spanish, and texts by authors such as Jorge Luis Borges, Rosalía de Castro and Paul Éluard into English. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and member of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, he is also Founding Editor, President and Publisher of the international literary review Interlitq. Graham Harrison Graham Harrison FCIL was a Fellow from 1995 to 1998 and asked to be readmitted to reflect his continued work and interests as a professional linguist. Having been a Lecturer in German and Russian at the Letterkenny Institute of Technology in Ireland for 18 years, he retired from teaching in 2008 and now focuses solely on his translation work. Harrison has translated more than 30 published works and his first book of Russian poetry translations was published in Ukraine in December. He has the DipTrans in Russian, and is also a member of the Society of Authors and the Irish Slavists Association. This summer he will spend a month learning Magyar.
