April 1st INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON LINGUISTICS AND LANGUAGE STUDIES 9-10 April Caritas Institute of Higher Education, Hong Kong Celebrating the society's 30th anniversary, with keynote speakers Prof Andy Kirkpatrick (University of Griffith, Australia) and Prof Icy Lee, HK COUNCIL NEWS CIOL Chief Executive, Ann Carlisle, reports on successes at the most recent meetings of Council Since our last report, there have been two meetings of Council – in November 2014 and January 2015. The November meeting started with the good news that the purchase of a property using the proceeds of the sale of Saxon House had completed. The search for a second property continues. I reported on my recent visit to China with the Chair, Keith Moffitt, to promote the Institute and IoLET examinations, and attend the 30th anniversary celebrations of the Hong Kong Society. Keith spoke about his attendance at the Metropolis conference in Milan in November, and his participation in a round table at the Association of Translation Companies conference. The Terms of Reference for the Admissions and Appeals Committees for the Chartered Linguist scheme were agreed and a panel was confirmed to consider applications for lay and Member/ Fellow appointments to the newly formed Disciplinary Committees. The January meeting received the audited accounts and the Treasurer's Annual Report. It also dealt with the formalities necessary in advance of the AGM, in March, including approval of the rule changes required following our governance review. Council approved the appointments to both Chartered Linguist and Disciplinary Committees and agreed to a new format Annual Review, which will be prepared in time for the AGM. I reported on plans to incorporate a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Charter at Members' Day 2015 and to hold a celebratory reception in November. I also confirmed that IoLET had been successful in winning the contract to supply the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) language examinations. IoLET has a long history of working with the FCO and this latest success reconfirms and strengthens ties between the two organisations. 32 The Linguist Vol/54 No/2 2015 www.ciol.org.uk INSTITUTE MATTERS DIVISIONS & SOCIETIES KEY DIVISIONS Business, Professions & Government: Interpreting: Translating: SOCIETIES Cambridge: German: Hong Kong: Lincolnshire: London: North West: Scottish: Spanish: BPG TD CAM GER LINC NW SCOT LON SP HK ID CONTACT DETAILS Judith Ridgway, bpg@ciol.org.uk id@ciol.org.uk Michael Cunningham, td@ciol.org.uk Leslie Ray, cambridgesociety @ciol.org.uk Stephanie Tarling, germansociety@ciol.org.uk Francis Lee, hongkongsociety@ ciol.org.uk Candia Hillier, lincolnshiresociety@ ciol.org.uk Rannheid Sharma, londonsociety@ciol.org.uk Katrin Hiietam, northwestsociety@ ciol.org.uk Anne Withers, scottishsociety@ciol.org.uk Rebekah Rhodes, spanishsociety@ciol.org.uk BPG ID TD CAM GER HK LINC LON NW SCOT SP GERMAN SOCIETY STUDY WEEKEND IN CAMBRIDGE 4-6 September Continuing a tradition of visits between the German and Cambridge societies, this year's event includes a conference on Gaelic languages and music in Ely, and a guided tour of Cambridge.
