Corrections
In the previous issue (TL53,5), two erroneous words
were inserted in error: on the cover, under the header
'To share or not to share?'; and on page 9, where the
troops learning French should not have been referred
to as 'British' (they were American). On page 13, an
omission was introduced: Maurice Barrès should have
been described as 'armchair general of L'Echo de
Paris and author of the revanchist Colette Baudoche…'
We would like to apologise for these errors.

After lunch, we made our way to Herrenhausen
Palace, with its beautiful grounds, botanical garden,
and exhibition on 'Hannovers Herrscher auf Englands
Thron'. Dinner at the side of the Maschsee ended a
lovely day, and a few participants returned to
Herrenhausen to enjoy a spectacular firework display.
On Sunday morning, we met at the Landesmuseum
for an excellently presented exhibition on 'Als die
Royals aus Hannover kamen'. Some of our party
enjoyed a last meal together before we all left for
home, heads reeling with Georges, wives and
mistresses (who were often quasi official and frequently
consulted by government ministers).
Ursula and Brian Rouvray had organised everything
to perfection, and everyone expressed their thanks for
such a wonderful weekend. There is, alas, insufficient
space to cover the clash between a strong-willed sat
nav and a determined driver, lenient local police, the
mystery of the missing garments, or the candlelight
breakfast when 'the lamps went out'.

The Scottish Society has enjoyed another productive
few months. In Dundee, we had an interesting talk by
Geoffrey Armitage on varieties of Italian. After
introducing the language and providing an overview of
its history, he gave examples of how Italian varies from
region to region, with a particular emphasis on
Naplese. He then presented historical evidence to
account for this range of linguistic diversity in Italy.
In Perth, in September, Alison Thomas from the
University of Edinburgh spoke about recent trends in
English Language Teaching (ELT). She discussed what
the concept ELT actually means in modern times, and
presented a selection of prominent points of discussion
,
which were opened up to the floor, resulting in an
interesting and enlightening debate.
