NORTH WEST CALLING Nick Byrne Director of the LSE Language Centre since 1999, Dr Nick Byrne is also the UK Director of the Confucius Institute for Business and co-Director of the European Commission's LUCIDE project on multilingualism. He sits on the Executive Board of AULC and the Advisory Board of the British Academy project 'Born Global: Rethinking Language Policy for 21st Century Britain'. See p.11 Lucile Desblache Dr Lucile Desblache is Director of the Centre for Research in Translation and Transcultural Studies at the University of Roehampton, and the course convener of their MA in Audiovisual Translation. She is the editor of JoSTrans (www.jostrans.org), and her main areas of research are music and translation, and non- human/animal representations in contemporary cultures. See p.22 Janet Fraser Janet Fraser has been a staff translator, a multilingual journalist and a Senior Lecturer in Translation at the University of Westminster. Freelance since 2010, she now combines translation and editing with examining and training roles. She is also a member of The Linguist Editorial Board. See p.8 Charis Fisher Charis Fisher is in her final year of a Modern Languages degree at the University of Bristol. Following Erasmus placements in Toulouse and Bologna, she is now trip secretary of ESN Bristol, organising events and trips for international students at the university. See p.18 Rosie Goldsmith Rosie Goldsmith is a freelance journalist specialising in arts and current affairs in the UK and abroad. A former presenter for flagship BBC radio shows, she is now involved in several campaigns to support translation and language learning, including the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Language. See p.24 Nil Okan Paniguian Nil Okan Paniguian JP FCIL is a Turkish Language Trainer at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, a lecturer at SOAS and King's College, and a member of the Centre for Language Pedagogy at SOAS. She is also a freelance legal interpreter and a magistrate. See p.26 Dörte Schabsky Dörte Schabsky is co-Founder of Work Inn, a coworking space in Dortmund, Germany.
