Poetry in motion
JUSTINE GILLHAM REFLECTS ON THE
RECENT TRANSLATING DIVISION EVENT
ON THE POEMS OF JORGE LUIS BORGES
The Translating Division's 'Poetry Translation, Lost
Found and Created' event was brilliantly led by
Committee member Cynthia Stephens on 31 January. I
was delighted to hear about this session for a multitude
of reasons. One of my primary motivations for learning
languages was to study literature, and this event
provided the opportunity to explore the nature and
purpose of literary translation, based on readings of
poetry by the Argentine poet Jorge Luis Borges.
Borges's work is exquisite, artful and profound, his
themes are highly philosophical and timeless; the
poems are literary gems. We enjoyed hearing the
original Spanish poems read aloud by two Argentines
and the English versions read by other volunteers.
Translators covering a wide variety of language
combinations then formed groups to discuss the
intricacies of the translations, with particular emphasis
on the competing concerns of the translator, whether
conveying a feeling or capturing the sense of individual
words. We found that poetry is particularly subjective in
translation, in contrast to the medical or legal texts we
may be more accustomed to translating for work.
In groups, we attempted to translate our favourite of
the selected poems, and it really made us appreciate
what a creative and rewarding endeavour it is. I
thoroughly enjoyed the evening. It deepened my
thoughts, providing a release from the confines of daily
life and routine, as reading great literature often does.
My thanks go to the organisers. I hope to attend more
events like this in the future and I highly recommend it
to other CIOL members.
