At these meetings, we brought our national foods to share; maybe it was the mixture of curry, tortilla and chocolate cake that promoted success. 4 The existence of liaison people in each local public service, who had participated in interpreter training, came to the supper meetings, knew the context – and could be contacted by interpreters at any time. I notice these low-cost activities have all but disappeared. The first two might be the result of academic and financial priorities. The third could be a casualty of the call centre approach. As far as I know, in terms of the last point, only INTRAN in Norfolk still has what it calls its service 'champions'. My instinct is that thought should be given to how to care for and nurture PSIs, especially the new generation. New approaches need not be the same as the ones in the pilot but should carry the same positive, creative ethos. There are course organisers who might be approached and helpful existing support systems, such as the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) and Institute of Interpreting and Translation (ITI), to build on. I suspect more is needed and few, except the PSIs themselves, will have the emotional capital to provide it.
