The Translating Division (TD) held a highly successful
Legal Translation event on 28 June at the European
Commission offices in London. The morning session
was opened by Karen Stokes, legal translator and
outgoing TD Chair.
The speakers, Anthony Pym (Professor of Translation
and Intercultural Studies, Rovira i Virgili University,
Tarragona), Brian Porro (Senior Translator, European
Commission), Juliette Scott (legal translator and author
of the blog Words to Deeds), Eleanor Sharpston
(Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the
European Union), covered numerous matters. These
included the importance of managing risk and trust in
legal translation (the UK badly needs translator
certification), the importance for clients and translators
of practice and trust, the search for 'lawyer-linguists'
(sophisticated back-room workers), and the
requirement for very high levels of accuracy.
The final session of the day, facilitated by John Evans
(Language Officer at the European Commission's DG
Translation), took the form of a translation workshop
using case studies in language groups.
Feedback was overwhelmingly favourable. Our
thanks to the joint organisers, Karen Stokes and John
Evans, and to Julie Hobbs and Jack Sellen in the
CIOL office.
