@CIOL_Linguists SUMMER 2023 The Linguist 31 INSTITUTE MATTERS Patricia Cabral, originally from Paraguay and currently residing in Ecuador, attained Professional English Speaker designation. Success in the Certified English test has already led to new work opportunities for Patricia. Once you reach a good standard in the language you are learning, she recommends gaining new knowledge by studying a topic via that language. "When I was at university, I started to read articles about my subject – healthcare – in English, and this helped me to integrate the English language into my life and personal development," she says. Yuchen Chen, a student at the University of Stirling, Scotland, attained the Professional English Speaker designation in the CIOL Certified English test while in his first year of a PhD in news translation. Yuchen credits Melvyn Bragg's Adventure in English for inspiring his language journey: "It radically changed my ideas about language learning, and I changed my goal from trying to become a native-level speaker of English to becoming a linguist. And that's why I took linguistic modules when I was studying my Master's." Early successful candidates Who is the test for? The test is for anyone over 18 years old who has a high level of spoken English and wants to prove this to themselves or to others, such as employers. It is available Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 5.30pm UK time, and can be taken online from the comfort of the candidate's own home or any other suitable location. To attain CIOL Professional English Speaker designation candidates must demonstrate the ability to: • Communicate with ease in professional, business or academic settings. • Confidently participate in workplace meetings and discussions. • Articulate complex ideas clearly when speaking or presenting. "The success of the RVC [Recognition, Validation and Certification] Accreditation scheme with universities around the world has demonstrated to CIOL the importance and value placed on English and CIOL globally," says CEO John Worne. "We also see jagged profiles among language learners, and that speaking skills can be the hardest for many. By providing a new test for professionals that is not linked to immigration or university entrance, but to professional and international working contexts, CIOL can fulfil the expectations of our Royal Charter and make our contribution towards spreading international goodwill and promoting Universal Understanding." See www.ciol.org.uk/certifiedenglish for more information or to book a test.
