Prizewinners, CIOL members, staff
and volunteers celebrated success in
languages at the CIOL Awards 2023
CIOL's Annual Awards celebrate and
recognise outstanding contributions to the
field of languages, as well as exceptional
achievement in our professional language
qualifications. Held this year as part of
Translators Day, the awards were presented
by our Royal Patron Prince Michael of Kent.
In addition to special awards for inspiring the
study of languages, candidates in CIOL's
language qualifications received awards for
achieving the highest marks in 2022. The
awards for Best Candidate went to Ozge
Solak for the DPSI, Mariane Lambert for the
DipTrans and Kirsty Lowe for the CertTrans.

Multilingual sports correspondent Chris
Dennis (centre), pictured with his wife Sabina
Webber and CIOL CEO John Worne, won an
award for inspiring people to learn languages.
Chris reports on sporting events in English
and French, and visits schools to encourage
pupils to choose languages. "I am both
thrilled and humbled to receive the David
Crystal Award, especially given the calibre of
previous recipients," he said. "Languages
have been an important part of my life for
over 40 years. I could not imagine life without
them. The key to good journalism is
compelling storytelling. Being able to have
people tell their story in their own language
rather than English is both professionally
beneficial and personally satisfying."
Kirsty Lowe received the Nick Bowen Award
after getting top marks in the CertTrans.
