INSTITUTE MATTERS CONTRIBUTORS Sabir Hasan Birot Who's on Council? Sabir Hasan Birot is a freelance interpreter and translator. See p.8 FIND OUT MORE ABOUT MEMBERS OF THE CIOL COUNCIL Trinidad Clares Trinidad Clares Flores MCIL is a freelance translator, and conference and legal interpreter. See p.12 Tim Cooper Since 2007, Tim Cooper has been a full-time terminologist at the European Commission, having spent 20 years working as a translator. See p.24 Alfred Cudjoe James Farmer MCIL was re-elected to Council in March. He has an MA in Oriental Studies (Japanese) and also speaks fluent French and good Russian. He has served on the Committee of the Business, Professions and Government Division since 2002 and is currently their Membership Secretary. My first contact with the French language came as a very small child, as my parents spoke in French if they didn't want me to understand. Moving swiftly on, I worked in the UK civil service for 30 years before taking early severance in 2012. Half of that time was spent on promoting trade with Japan and, later on, trade policy with Japan and other Far Eastern countries. For three years, I was joint Project Manager for the European Commission's highly successful Gateway to Japan campaign, based in Brussels. I also did part-time Japanese teaching. I joined the Institute in 1981, taking the entrance examination in French. I have been closely involved for the last 12 years; this is my second spell on Council. Having retired from work, I have more time to devote to Institute matters and am keen to contribute all I can to Council. I would particularly like to see more involvement with the Far East. A list of current Council members appears on page 3. For further details about CIOL committees and governance, see the 'About us' section at www.iol.org.uk. 34 The Linguist Karen Stokes FCIL is a professional freelance translator, working from French to English in the fields of law, international development and business. She is a visiting lecturer on the Diploma in Translation (DipTrans) course at the University of Westminster, and designs and delivers continuing professional development (CPD) workshops for the CIOL. Oddly enough, I don't recall 'translator' being on the list of career options recommended for linguists at Oxford in the 1980s, and a good thing too: well-versed as I was in the 19thcentury novel and 17th-century drama, with a bit of Old French and existentialism thrown in for good measure, I was hardly equipped to survive commercially. It was only 15 years later, after working in business, living abroad and teaching in Further Education, that I braved the Dip Trans, began freelancing and joined the Institute. A year later, I found myself on a divisional committee and have been actively involved ever since, at the sharp end of organising events, taking part in working groups and, more recently, chairing a series of committees. I joined Council to bring some of that practical experience to bear at a more strategic level. I have a special interest in CPD, the status of professional linguists and the governance of professional associations, and am keen to help raise the Institute's profile and build strong relationships with other institutions.
