My parents spoke both Kashmiri and Urdu, and I picked up the Mirpuri dialect while going to school and college in the city of Mirpur. In 1985, I did my Master's in English Literature at the University of Punjab. In the UK, I did an MBA at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, and a PhD at Middlesex University and served as a lecturer at Middlesex and Qatar University until 2000. After that, I took up administrative jobs to focus on writing books. My novel A Muslim Corrie has been well received by Amazon Kindle readers. Since 2010, I have worked mostly as a translator. There is a large Mirpuri-speaking community in the UK, particularly in Leeds, Luton, Manchester, Bradford and Birmingham, with an estimated 700,000 people from Azad Kashmir residing in the UK. They frequently need information in Mirpuri – mostly NHS and social services leaflets and letters, and local council bulletins about events and services. Mirpuri is not too different from Punjabi, and speakers of these languages can easily communicate with each other. This is facilitated by the fact that speakers of both languages can incorporate a vast vocabulary of local English in their speech. During my career as a translator, one local council decided to cut translation costs by sending work to India and Pakistan, where fees are lower than in the UK. When the translated leaflets were distributed among the local Mirpuri and Punjabi communities, they found them hard to understand. This is because the overseas translators had translated everything – even words such as NHS and DSS (i.e. welfare benefits). The council soon reverted to UK-based translators. There is also a demand for the translation of marriage certificates for those who want to bring a Pakistani or Kashmiri spouse to the UK, as the Home Office requires an English translation. The same is required by courts of law when a couple seeks a divorce, child custody arrangement or financial settlement. When there are property disputes among people who own properties in Pakistan and Kashmir, and they want to file a case in a British court, legal documents from overseas courts and registry offices need to be translated into English.
