Golden languages moments Having just read the interesting article about Bishop Nick Baines' linguistic ability (TL61,3), I was minded to write and comment that I, in fact, was in the interpreters' booth in Stuttgart, when he mentioned the audience of 12,000. The Bishop won't have listened to the interpretation, obviously, but it was very interesting interpreting for current German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and the late Kofi Annan. They spoke at Kirchentag, an annual four- day Christian celebration, which moves from major German city to major German city on an annual basis, alternately hosted by the German Protestant and Catholic churches. Interpretation is provided at select venues during Kirchentag and topics include ecumenism, politics, the environment and, of course, religious matters. I have had the privilege of interpreting at seven venues across Germany, often for very well known figures, and I liked the interviewer's phrase "golden languages moment"! Heather Al-Jawad FCIL Editor adds: Such fascinating work! If you have a golden languages moment to share, please email linguist.editor@ciol.org.uk. Arabic error Whoever created the graphic on page 3 (TL61,3) was evidently unaware that the default settings in many standard graphics applications fail to display Arabic text correctly. (merhaban/'hello') is right; مرحبا is wrong. It happens a lot – I've got a collection of screenshots and photos! Chris Thompson MCIL Editor replies: We apologise for using this image, which contained an error.
