A robust structure that allows for constructive debate is essential. You are a member of CIOL Council – would you encourage other members to get involved with CIOL governance? I always say that the most important thing when you are thinking about joining a board is whether you really care about the organisation – whether you have a passion for what it does. There is, of course, also the time commitment to consider, and it is vital that you are aware of your statutory duties. I really do care about CIOL and that is why I enjoy being a member of Council. We shape and steer the strategy, but we also do an important job of scrutiny and making sure things are being done properly. Governance is important – members' fees are at stake, and so is the future and security of the organisation. So I would say: do it because you care about it. In terms of joining CIOL governance, I would recommend taking part in other boards and committees as well as thinking about Council. I started on The Linguist Editorial Board and learnt a lot from that. Council is elected – and this is a bit daunting. When you go for an elected role you are putting yourself out there. I have a bit of a rule though: if I am holding back because I feel self-conscious or I am worried about failing, I try to push through that. Of course, if I have a real concern – like the way the organisation is run or its ethics – that is different. But if it is just feeling uncomfortable, I try to overcome that and would encourage other people to as well! Overall, I've found being part of CIOL Council interesting and important at the same time. It is a serious responsibility because governance matters; we are there to ask questions and to hold the team to account, but it is also stimulating and fulfilling because we are shaping the future of an organisation I really care about.
