GETTING INVOLVED 34 The Linguist Vol/60 No/1 2021 thelinguist.uberflip.com INSTITUTE MATTERS Rahul Bhagvat Rahul Bhagvat is the National Coordinator for BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha's children's activities throughout the UK and in Europe. He leads a team of more than 500 volunteers who serve over 3,000 children, delivering a wide range of projects and services for their academic, artistic, moral, cultural and spiritual growth. In 2009, BAPS was recognised with the prestigious Queen's Award for Voluntary Service for its work in holistic child development. See p.14 Lucy Makepeace Founder of The Language Agency, Lucy Makepeace MCIL is a translator, interpreter and language coach. The bulk of her work is in translating legal documents, interpreting in legal settings and teaching legal English to French lawyers. Having lived and worked in France, Senegal, Togo, Madagascar and Germany, her working languages are French, German and Dutch. She is an SDL certified post-editor and a member of EULETA (the European Legal English Teachers' Association). See p.10 Darinka Mangino Darinka Mangino teaches interpreting at ENALLT-UNAM university in Mexico City, and founded Lexica Aula Virtual para Interpretes and Proyecto Cenzontle, an online platform offering training for Spanish>English interpreters. A member of AIIC (the International Association of Conference Interpreters), she is a high-profile conference and legal interpreter with more than 20 years' experience and holds a post-graduate certificate in forensic linguistics. See p.16 Katerina Strani Dr Katerina Strani MCIL CL is Associate Professor and Head of Cultural Studies at the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies, Heriot-Watt University. Her background is in languages and politics. She has published papers on intercultural dialogue, identity and migration, and hate speech, as well as an edited volume on Multilingualism and Politics (Palgrave, 2020). An assessor for the Diploma in Translation (DipTrans) examinations, she speaks French, Greek and Russian. See p.24 Andrew Wong Andrew Wong is a Singaporean Chinese translator living in Tokyo, where he enjoys wandering into picture books and imaginary worlds with his family. Venturing into translation after studying the languages of film and Japanese at the University of Stirling, he now also works on technical and financial documents. The translator of The World's Poorest President Speaks Out, he is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and contributes to the Japan chapter's translation blog. See p.22 Özlem Yilmaz Özlem Yilmaz is a 20-year-old student and activist from Germany dedicated to environmentalism and sustainability. While studying business administration at university level, she also serves as a marketing lead at Climate Cardinals, an international youth-led non-profit organisation working to make the climate movement more accessible to those who don't speak English. See p.18 CONTRIBUTORS The Translating Division is always pleased to welcome new members. Sandra Fernandes Tavares, who joined the Steering Group in September, explains why she wanted to get involved. "Since 2007, when I started practising as a translator, I have always aspired to providing the highest standards of work while raising my customers' awareness of the importance of qualifications to achieve optimal results. As a CIOL member, I have been able to demonstrate my commitment to professional development, develop my skills as a translator and interact with other professionals. Joining the Translating Division Steering Group represents a chance to contribute my own experience in the field, discuss day-to-day matters concerning this dynamic industry, and help create resources relevant to translators. Networking with other members offers opportunities for further personal and professional growth."
