See p.18 34 The Linguist Vol/59 No/3 2020 thelinguist.uberflip.com INSTITUTE MATTERS CONTRIBUTORS COUNCIL NEWS Judith Gabler, Chair of Council, reports on the first Council meeting to be held entirely online CIOL Council members, like everyone else, were hurled into a new situation as we adapted to Covid-19 restrictions. Travel plans cancelled and agendas reorganised, we undertook our first Zoom meeting with around 20 Council members and staff online. What would not have seemed possible 12 months ago was now our new reality – and it worked! Council noted changes in our composition, mainly as a result of the March 2020 AGM, and expressed thanks to everyone for their invaluable contributions. As is usual in the first meeting post- AGM, the Terms of Reference for all committees and boards were received and endorsed. Of particular importance was an update from CEO Ann Carlisle FCIL on how the organisation is responding to the Covid-19 crisis internally, as far as staff and operations are concerned, and our ability to continue to service and support our membership. It was unanimously agreed to prioritise a better understanding of the short- and medium-term impact on our members and the language professions, given the economic uncertainty involved. Inextricably linked to this is our ability to adapt to change, and decisions are underway regarding what we may need to stop or start doing, and what we can do better or more of. Our new online resource centre shows our commitment to supporting members. It is packed with reports, guides and industry news. In these times of staying safe and well, the mini guide on 'Health and Wellbeing' for linguists from our Translating Division is a must-read. Council ended on a reflective note, with a tremendous 'thank you' to Professor Chris Pountain HonFCIL who, as outgoing Chair of our Educational Trust (IoLET), has made an outstanding contribution to our meetings over the past six years.
