@Linguist_CIOL APRIL/MAY The Linguist 33 INSTITUTE MATTERS COUNCIL NEWS CIOL Chair of Council Judith Gabler reports on the January meeting January was the last meeting of Council before the AGM in March. Approving the audited annual accounts for the year to 31 August 2019 was therefore a core element of the agenda, as well as reviewing CIOL's financial position for the business year to date and agreeing any necessary actions which may require further development and investment. A new Business and Corporate partnership concept will extend our potential for cooperation across the industry, and open up new opportunities to grow our non-member database and accelerate our membership services with additional income. Three years after acquiring eCPD Webinars we have agreed some changes that will optimise our brand potential and develop our core platform offering. There will be more targeted content, our own Insight research, videos and, most importantly, additional member value. This exciting transition will be effected over the next few months. CIOL and CIOL Qualifications (CIOLQ) are intrinsically linked and interdependent, and Council is always mindful to review the impact of each area of the business on the overall whole. As a result of IoLET (the Institute of Linguists Educational Trust) being renamed CIOL Qualifications, some adjustments will follow later this year to ensure that we are aligned throughout our brand. Our qualifications are gaining additional traction, as both the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) and the Diploma in Police Interpreting (DPI) will be the recognised qualification level for the national police procurement of language services, which was launched in February. Our member growth remains stable compared to the same period last year, with a healthy pipeline of applications in progress. The demand for chartership is continually on the rise, and at the end of December 2019 we were thrilled to note a 33% increase in Chartered Linguists to 668 (up from 502 this time last year). judith.gabler@ciol.org.uk A debt of gratitude CHRIS POUNTAIN HONOURS TIM CONNELL AS HE STEPS DOWN FROM HIS ROLE AS VICE-PRESIDENT AFTER 17 YEARS Professor Tim Connell is stepping down as a Vice-President of CIOL after 17 years of invaluable service. His involvement with the institute began in 1986, when we worked together to devise exams for the ELIC Diploma. An internationally recognised authority on language policy, and on standards in translation and interpreting, he was closely involved with the development and quality assurance of our qualifications. My predecessor as Chair of the IoL Educational Trust Board, he also served CIOL on a range of committees and projects. Perhaps more importantly, he was and continues to be a notable advocate for languages through his extensive public lecture engagements; his media broadcasts and interviews, reports, articles and letters to the press; his representations to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Languages; and the consultancies he has undertaken for government, the British Academy, the CBI and many other bodies. Tim has been closely involved with Canning House (the Luso-Hispanic Brazilian Society) for most of his life. His academic publications include a number of pedagogical works on Spanish language, for which he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters by City University. He is the author of many well-informed and engaging pieces, usually (but far from exclusively) on language-related themes, to which readers beyond the world of language practitioners can instantly relate. The projection of his professional life is reflected in his longstanding involvement with the City of London, of which he is a Freeman, and where he is a Liveryman of the Stationers' and Newspaper Makers' Company, a Fellow of Gresham College and Chair of the Gresham Society. After many years of dedicated service as Vice-President, we owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude, and trust that he will continue to be a passionate ambassador for languages and professional standards for many years to come.
