Like dicionarios.cc, it gives you one-page results and is easy to use: you just choose a language pair and type the word or phrase you want to look for. By clicking on the gear icon, you also have the option of adding, excluding or reordering sources, and including monolingual sources. Given that dicionarios.cc and MagicSearch work in a very similar way, they are a powerful combination when it comes to speeding up your searches during assignments. There is no need to open dozens of tabs that will slow down your computer. Community support Sometimes you need a response to a specific question, and for this, the place I go to most often is ProZ (proz.com), the most popular portal for translators with more than 1 million registered users. Despite the site's popularity, translation students and new translators tend to underestimate its usefulness. ProZ offers a variety of services, ranging from finding jobs to education and tools. You can easily set up a student or freelancer account and use the features you need the most. This is where the Brazilian resource dicionarios.cc comes in handy. The website gathers online monolingual dictionaries from six major languages: Portuguese, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Although it is designed in Portuguese, it is extremely easy to use: you just need to choose the desired language and type the word you want to know the meaning of. Dicionarios.cc shows you the results from all the dictionaries of that language on the same page. If you want deeper results, you can click on definição completa or use the drop-down menu on the search bar. It also includes synonyms, antonyms, a thesaurus and machine translation engines for some languages. As it covers all of my working languages, I save a lot of time and no longer get lost among a myriad of tabs. Search no further MagicSearch (magicsearch.org) is a multilingual metasearch tool that allows you to search multiple sources, such as corpora, THE RIGHT SELECTION Translators have a vast range of tools at their fingertips (above); a multilingual metasearch tool removes the need for multiple tabs (below) Translator Micael Pinto is co-owner of the translation education website Alumiar Elísio. Some other features are exclusive to paying members, but if you are a student or a newcomer to the translation industry, the free version is a good way to join a translation community and start networking, studying or marketing your services. For CIOL members, including Student Affiliates and IoLET Affiliates, TransNet is also a fantastic translation forum that is free to use. It has the advantage of guaranteeing the professionalism of its subscribers, as CIOL members. Keep informed Slator (slator.com) is a resource rather than a tool, but it is included in my Top 5 for good reason, as it brings its users all the latest news, reports and insights about translation and language technology. You can also subscribe to their weekly newsletter to get their content directly to your inbox, including notifications of new episodes of their podcast. Technology is becoming more and more relevant in the translation field, mainly because of the latest advances in machine translation. It is important to keep up-to-date with these technologies because they will end up influencing the way translators work. In the long run, Slator may save you more time than any other tool and help you to stay a step ahead of other translators, because knowledge and skills are what matter most.
