@Linguist_CIOL OCTOBER/NOVEMBER The Linguist 33 INSTITUTE MATTERS I joined CIOL in March 2019 and previously had the chance to work for two large UK awarding bodies, where I held roles mainly within qualification assessment and development areas. I experienced everything from the thrill of GCSE and A level results days (mostly happy learners) to the frequent changes within the vocational sector, including the apprenticeships reform in England. The role at CIOL particularly stood out to me as I have always recognised the importance of languages in our world. My native language is Lithuanian but I was fortunate to grow up in a culturally diverse, multilingual environment so I also speak Russian and Polish. Since moving to London in 2010, I have developed a deeper appreciation for the role that languages have in sustaining and connecting today's truly global society. This understanding adds significant value to the work I do at CIOL. My role as Live Assessment Team Lead is to head up our assessment delivery team within the qualifications part of the organisation. I have received a warm welcome, and get to work with amazing people who are very driven and passionate about what they do. This makes a big difference to our work, which involves organising exams for all of our qualifications to ensure that each learner has a fair and straightforward opportunity to demonstrate their skills and be appropriately awarded. Delivering our examinations in a vast number of languages is a new challenge for me, but at the same time it is very rewarding to see the difference this effort makes to the lives and careers of our learners. Looking ahead, my key goal is to ensure the examinations we offer always have our learners at centre stage, and that the whole assessment process not only maintains best practice in the field but also takes into account the constantly changing world around us. At the heart of everything we do is a determination to ensure that our learners are assessed in a way that enables them to thrive in whatever context they choose to use their languages in. I am therefore excited and positive about the future and what we can offer our learners and the wider stakeholders we engage with. Sa sandaling iyon, nawari ko na ako'y naninirahan sa isang kapuluan na may higit sa 100 katutubong wika na hindi na gaanong kinahuhumalingan ng mga tao. Subalit, napagtanto ko na sa iba't-ibang dako ng mundo ay iniaalok ng mga kumpanya ang kani- kanilang mga produkto sa lokal na katutubong wika ng mga parokyano nila. Ang sulok ng merkado na aking natuklasan – ang paghatid ng mga serbisyo sa pagsasalokal mula wikang Ingles patungong Tagalog – ay natural na umangkop sa akin. Ang mga pinakauna kong kliyente ay nagmula sa akademya at mga samahang hindi nagpapatubo tulad ng American Red Cross. Ang pinakamalaking tiyempo sa aking karera ay naganap noong nilapitan ako upang isalokal ang mga mobile phone ng Nokia sa taong 2001. Sa mga panahong iyon, walang sinumang nag-aalok ng mobile phone na nasa wikang Tagalog o Filipino ang UI o User Interface nito. Napakalaki ang proyektong iyon kaya't naglakas-loob akong itatag ang naging isa sa mga kauna-unahang Localization service providers sa Asya – ang QwertyWorks – at nagsimula akong kumuha ng mga katrabaho at kaagapay. Sa kalaunan, kami din ang nagsalokal ng nangungunang search engine sa daigdig at ng pinakatanyag na social media network. Ngayon, ang grupo ng QwertyWorks ay binubuo ng higit sa 400 na propesyonal ng katutubong wika at kultura mula sa 72 bansa. Ibinabalik namin ang ilang bahagi ng aming kinikita bilang puhunan sa pagbuo ng mga produkto at serbisyo na lalong magsusulong ng pag-unlad ng Tagalog at iba pang mga wika sa Pilipinas. Bilang pang-lipunang programa ng QwertyWorks, ako at ang aking asawa na si Judy ay tumutulong na magpakalat ng mga libreng aklat na pambata sa mga pangunahing wika ng Pilipinas sa pamamagitan ng Libreo.ph. Ito ang aming munting paraan upang maitatak ang pagmamahal sa sariling wika sa puso ng mga mambabasa sa Pilipinas.
