INSTITUTE MATTERS
Hiba Bayyat ACIL, an interpreter and
translator working in Arabic and English, set
up the North East UK network this year. "I felt
there was a significant scarcity of information
available in the area for both future and
existing professional interpreters and
translators, as well as a shortage of training
events and networking opportunities," she
explains. "Our Facebook group quickly grew
to 32 members and we look forward to
meeting up soon and setting up events."

For some years now, CIOL has operated a
number of networks, societies and special
interest groups on various subjects. The
groups currently in operation – three divisions
(Translating, Interpreting and Business,
Professions and Government) and ten
regional networks (listed opposite) – make an
important contribution to the language
professions, as they allow us, as a
community, to recognise that we struggle
with the same challenges, and offer us
forums to address these issues effectively.
They also provide an opportunity for those
who want to give back to a profession that
has supported them through their personal
growth, for example by mentoring linguists
who are starting out or looking for new ideas.
CIOL was set up to enable the industry to
share knowledge, support each other and
increase professionalism – everything that our
membership networks embody. They also
identify trends affecting the industry, and
where CIOL and its members should spend
their efforts to address these issues
effectively. They are there to drive the
industry forward as a collective, providing a
level of support, helping to break down silos
and barriers around language and culture,
and enabling people to communicate and
live their lives better.
We are looking to further develop and
grow the networks, and welcome the
recently formed North East UK, South West
UK, and London and SE networks to the
CIOL family. These groups need your
support, wherever you are in the world. You
can do this in a variety of ways, from signing
up to their Facebook groups to attending
events, writing blogs and volunteering at one
of their events.
