32 The Linguist Vol/58 No/3 2019 ciol.org.uk/tl INSTITUTE MATTERS Phillip Churm MCIL As an annual opportunity to meet up with friends and colleagues, Members' Day is always worth underlining in the diary. We have well- functioning membership networks, attended by enthusiastic and engaging members, but at least once a year it is enjoyable to re-connect with the headquarters team and wider membership. I was accompanied by my daughter Isobel and son George, who is a wheelchair user. Although they attended as guests, they still found it an interesting and worthwhile experience. George especially enjoyed mixing with the other attendees, while Isobel, who is a media undergraduate, found the experience of an international conference, and opportunity to network, enormously beneficial. For us, the British Library Conference Centre was a very convenient location. Travelling to St Pancras from Nottingham and Leicester was simple, and for a wheelchair user, the venue deserved top marks for access and facilities – evidence of CIOL's inclusion policy towards both members and their immediate families. The seminars were interesting and prompted lively debate. Well done to the CIOL team, who worked tirelessly from start to finish. Looking forward to 2020 already. Liudmila Tomanek MCIL I derive great professional drive and inspiration from Members' Day, which is why I returned for the second consecutive year this March. CIOL defines the standards that are the quality benchmark for translators, which is just one of the reasons that this event has become paramount to my career, helping me to plan my annual CPD and keeping me tuned in to progress in the industry. This year's most exciting news was CIOL's acquisition of eCPD Webinars, as online learning comfortably fits within the busy schedule of a translator. I also found out that the Translating Division run their own events throughout the year, and I have now bookmarked their events page. Speakers from related professional fields offered a multitude of perspectives on the translation process, and I found Dr Séverine Hubscher-Davidson's talk on emotional intelligence particularly useful. Translators are left alone with a text and it is as important to discuss the emotional aspects as it is to consider stylistics and choice of lexis. This event was deeply enriching and a source of material for my translation practice and CPD diary. For example, following Daniel Pageon's presentation, I bought his book, The World of the Voice-over, in order to look into the possibility of building skills in this area. Zahra Benallal, Student Affiliate As a final-year Translation and Interpreting student, the main reason I wanted to attend Members' Day was to talk with translators and interpreters, and get a feel for the industry. I went on my own and was initially intimidated by all the smart people in the room, but they were very open and approachable. The day was divided into five talks with refreshments in between. I was worried it would feel like university, but that wasn't the case. 'Starting your Career as a Freelancer' was the most helpful seminar I have ever had. The presenters were two young women, not much older than me, which gave me a lot of hope, and I had a chance to introduce myself at the end. Bernadette O'Rourke's Threlford Memorial Lecture also stood out. Looking at how people have a biased image of certain languages, it was eye-opening and easy to follow, using real-life stories. I met many language professionals, who I can now email for advice if I need it. The linguist community is so welcoming and I will definitely be back next year.
