32 The Linguist Vol/58 No/2 2019 ciol.org.uk/tl INSTITUTE MATTERS public-facing engagement, although it is still the Trust's official name. This does not fundamentally affect its governance. Exam candidates join membership Over the last few years there have been a number of much-needed changes within the organisation, one of which was the introduction of a new IoLET Affiliate membership grade. This was introduced specifically for our linguists preparing for one of CIOL Qualifications' professional exams. Introduced in September 2016, the grade formed part of the new Membership Pathway. It provides access to a range of exam preparation materials, including past papers and examiners' reports. As part of a growing network of members, IoLET Affiliates also have access to a range of member benefits, professional services and support. Once they have gained one of our qualifications, they are entitled to upgrade to Associate member automatically and, with the requisite experience, to full Member. This comes with additional benefits, such as a listing in the popular Find-a-Linguist directory, which puts buyers of language services in touch directly I n February 2019, CIOL announced a new trading name for its Awarding Organisation. The IoL Educational Trust (IoLET) is now known as CIOL Qualifications. Along with a new name, there is a new visual identity with an updated logo. This change marks the start of an exciting chapter for CIOL by internally repositioning two key parts of the business, bringing them closer together, and creating a stronger and clearer brand image across all CIOL's functions. It is a hugely significant move, in both membership and qualifications, and one which should make a positive impact on the organisation in the coming years. A brief history The Institute of Linguists Educational Trust was set up in 1977 to allow qualifications and educational activities to be managed by a body with charitable status. The name remained unchanged for nearly 30 years, until the Royal Charter was awarded on 19 July 2005 and the Institute of Linguists, as such, ceased to exist. At the time, the Trust was a separate legal entity from the Institute and could not adopt the word 'chartered', while 'Educational Trust' alone did not clearly link it to CIOL. Following much deliberation, Henry Pavlovich (Director 1998-2005) proposed that the name be changed to IoL Educational Trust (IoLET), which was seconded by Dr Nick Bowen (founder Trustee Director). From 1 September 2005, the Institute became known as the Chartered Institute of Linguists and the IoL Educational Trust began trading. The move to CIOL Qualifications, as the new trading name, means that 'IoLET' will no longer be used in with members. At present there are no plans to rename this grade of membership. New exam series The Real Lives exam was introduced in June 2018, and within a matter of months it has made a significant impact in schools up and down the country. It is a multiple-choice listening comprehension, which tests practical, applied language skills in real-life scenarios. It is of particular interest to students who are cadets or who are completing awards such as the London Challenge, Duke of Edinburgh and St John Ambulance. The exams are set at A2 level, with the intention that students in Year 10 (ages 14-15), or stronger students in Year 9, will be able to sit the exam without extra teaching or revision. Moving forward, CIOL Qualifications will be focusing on the further development of qualifications and competency frameworks to recognise differentiated skills across a range of levels, not just in the UK but also abroad. Our qualifications have been updated on the Ofqual register to reflect the new name; they all have 'CIOL Qualifications' in the title, which permanently replaces 'IoLET'.
