FEBRUARY/MARCH The Linguist 33 I knew I wanted to learn languages from when I was about eight and heard my brother speaking the French he'd learnt at school. I did not understand everything, but the new sounds were intoxicating. I was desperate to learn French but English was the foreign language taught in my school. After a short-lived disappointment, I embraced the new language with a passion. In my teenage years, I studied Latin, French, Russian and Arabic. I loved them all, but I knew quite early that I wanted to live in an English-speaking country and to be surrounded by the language. I have always worked with languages (English, Spanish, Catalan) as a teacher, secretary, translator, interpreter, subtitler, transcreator – you name it! I currently hold a part-time position as Senior Lecturer at the University of Roehampton, teaching Spanish, translation and interpreting at undergraduate level, and technical translation and subtitling for the hard of hearing at Master's level. A life with languages In her native Catalan, Senior Lecturer Inma Pedregosa MCIL discusses her varied career as an academic, translator and interpreter, working with students and film stars, inmates and patients My working life is very varied and rewarding. I am fortunate to be in contact with students who share my passion for languages. Alongside that work, I also love to go out and interpret, and to do translation work from my home. It sounds tedious, but I love researching new vocabulary and preparing to interpret for somebody new. I feel I am always learning. London is an amazing place to live and I have met people from all walks of life here. I have interpreted for detainees in court cells, for cancer patients in hospitals, and for film stars and directors at the London Film Festival. I even followed the former Catalan president, Carles Puigdemont, for a couple of days when he was in London in 2016. As a huge football fan, the job I am most proud of is interpreting for the UEFA Champions League when Barça played in England. I got a kiss from Catalan icon Gerard Piqué, but I would really like the chance to interpret for my footballing hero, Leo Messi. @Linguist_CIOL INSTITUTE MATTERS
