INSTITUTE MATTERS
the Anglophoner tag (At) has been an
annual fixture in the cIoL German Society's
calendar of events for almost 25 years. It was
the brainchild of the late, great linguist John
D Graham – the society's éminence grise –
who was also active in several other
translation organisations. he launched the At
in Xanten, near Düsseldorf, in 1995, as an
annual forum for translators, interpreters and
other linguists who use english and German
in their work. John was looking to provide an
opportunity for exchanging ideas and
experiences, solving common problems and
establishing networks at a time when online
forums were still in their infancy.
right from the start, a distinguishing feature
of the At was that it was not solely for
members of the Institute of Linguists' German
Society, but also for members of a number of
other associations and networks of translators.
John took the view that we should learn from
other networks and share our knowledge
with them. currently there are three other
networks on the At steering committee:
AtIcoM (the Association of Professional
translators and Professional Interpreters), the
BDÜ (Federal Association of Interpreters and
translators) and the ItI (Institute of translation
and Interpreting) German Network.
John Graham passed the At torch to
reiner heard, President of AtIcoM, in 2002.
When you google 'Anglophoner tag', his
association's website tops the list of search
results: aticom.de/netzwerke/anglophoner-tag.
there, you can find write-ups for some of the
Anglophoner tags that have been held to
date, plus information about the next event
(when it becomes available). reiner has also
been the driving force in establishing our
social media channels, and has set up a
Facebook page and hashtags for the
individual conferences.
We take it in turns to host the At, which is
always held in an interesting location in
Germany or the uk. Although there is usually
a theme, there is also room for reports on
new developments and discussions about
any issue. the talks and presentations are
open to members and non-members.
this year it was the turn of the cIoL
German Society to host the event. Putting on
an Anglophoner tag takes a lot of planning,
and the host organisation has to coordinate
dates with the other associations. Ideally,
each of the networks is able to put forward
a speaker, or at least provide contacts.
