November TRANSLATORS' WORKSHOP Saturday 5 November SORAT Hotel Ambassador, Berlin Speakers include Christin Dallmann on SP GER DIVISIONS & SOCIETIES The Interpreting Division held its AGM on 18 June, preceded by two seminars and a networking lunch. The first speaker was the new Chair of Council, Karen Stokes, a CIOL member since 2001, who "wanted to make a difference from the very beginning". As Chair, she believes it is crucial to speak to members. Urging attendees to get more closely involved, she explained that Council works as a representative democracy with a three- year strategic plan. At the moment, CIOL engages with members using various means of communication, including The Linguist, the AGM, Members' Day, social media and the website. Some of the most important goals are for CIOL to become more visible, increase membership and ensure that Council achieves a more diverse and balanced demographic. The second seminar was given by Alexander Drechsel, who delivered a fantastic hands-on session on how interpreters can maximize the use of tablets and smartphones. He spoke about some of the built-in features of the iPhone and iPad, such as help with instant translation. He also emphasised the issue of security and confidentiality when using iCloud, pointing out that data saved on iCloud and Dropbox is stored on another computer (on a server farm) and that we must be careful when storing sensitive data. Nevertheless, information shared via Dropbox is more secure than an email attachment, which would be transmitted via various servers. He moved on to the security aspects of this and other remote storage systems, including NAS (network attached storage), which can be plugged into one's computer, providing vast storage space safely and accessible through the internet. We were surprised to learn that, ideally, digital information should be held in three places for safest "back up". The formal part of the AGM was held after lunch, and I was elected to the Management Committee for 2016/17, along with Gabriela Bocanete, Maria-Teresa Grau, Christine Pocock and Marta Stelmaszak. It was with great sadness that we said farewell to Jan Kern, who stepped down after many years of service to the division, including more than 20 years as Hon Treasurer. At a post-AGM committee meeting, it was confirmed that the division will also benefit from the support of Trevor Adcock, Galyna Bland and Michael Wells as co-optees.
